Holding it down last week on 'Poor Ned' from Redgum's 'If You Don't Fight You Lose' album released 1978 whilst getting a nod of approval from the boss John Schumann.
Channeling the great American drummer Russel Kunkel. There’s more than meets the eye and ear going on here, simplicity is made up of many things.
Supporting the soloists by holding the bass drum steady and rhythmically consistent whilst underpinning the transitional fills and anchoring the pulse for the rest of the band, especially Jamie Harrison giving him a solid bed on which to hang his bass line.
The rhythmic variations and nuance are played on the hi-hat not interfering with the bass drum rhythm. Subtle but very musical. Playing hot-rods (instead of sticks) gives the texture, depth, and a width of sound and note I feel the song requires, especially in a barn.
Dynamics are always important and evident here. I was looking for the shaker in readiness for the next song…looking slightly anxious.
