Playing the outro to the rearrangement of The Who's 'Behind Blue Eyes'...

Updated: May 15, 2024

Playing the outro to the rearrangement of The Who's 'Behind Blue Eyes' entailed quite a number of hi-hat techniques well worth highlighting... Julian Ferraretto’s virtuoso and intense violin solo aside. Keeping the 2&4 (left-foot) constant through the chorus and fill transitioning to the solo is the first to be highlighted, and in the solo outro, phrasing using open hi-hat accents whilst keeping time and that solid groove. The accents are underpinned by the bass drum with the opening and closing hi-hat of two differing note lengths. Often overlooked is the step hi-hat (left foot) which enacts the accents and also produces a note upon closing and which becomes part of the rhythm. 🥁 Finally, the coda of the song has a 3 over 4 polyrhythmic phrase which is introduced on the hi-hat one bar prior to the rhythm being duplicated on the guitar. The inner workings of seemingly simple but musical performances often reveal the myriad of techniques that are entailed and acquired through study and experience.
