Sixth in the series of sessions for the Butcherbird Collective this time of Ray Lamontagne’s‘ Jolene’...loving the ‘feel’ here.

Holding down that ‘pocket’ using brushes to a click at 60 bpm with a ‘natural’ fade (by just playing quieter)...a beautiful effect. Always a challenge playing to a click this slow with space and nuance but so rewarding when it sits so nicely. The (drum-only) outro in this clip was composed using displacement (syncopation), step hi-hat, open hi-hat accent, and ghost notes implying the half-time shuffle embellished with some dynamic interplay between the snare, hi-hat, and bass drum.
