The remit was for a 12-bar, 20-second overdub with a half-time feel for the first 6 bars then resolving to a regular 4/4 repeated phrase for the last 6 bars at 140bpm (beats per minute). A sparse rhythmic composition.
The architecture (profile) of a drum pattern can involve many techniques (devices) exampled in this pattern which uses a right-hand ostinato with the hi-hat opening on beat 1 overlaid on a highly-syncopated snare and bass drum rhythm creating a displaced, predominantly linear groove.
Stylistically it takes its influences from Afrobeat (Nigerian Tony Allen in Fela Kuti’s band) and Jazz Funk from Mike Clark on Herbie Hancock’s 1974 ‘Thrust’ album…though at a slower tempo. Video taken from rehearsal stages. Challenging though rewarding.
