Why does this groove work so well?

Laying down the beds for Butcherbird Collective’s rearrangement of Little Feats’ ‘Willin’. Playing with nylon brushes creates that grainy feel and character I was looking for but more importantly, the left-hand pattern sits beautifully with Jamie Harrison’s bass line by locking in with the slightly accented first two semi-quaver (sixteenth) notes played on beats 2&4, right through each section, solo, verse, and chorus. In addition, listen to how Julian Ferraretto reinforces the right-hand quavers in the last four bars of the verse adding more weight to the overall rhythm. And finally, in making the whole pattern more melodic and musical, phrasing along to the vocal line in the outro chorus. The hi-hat variations (left-foot) add rhythmic variation and intensity. Love this approach. Great days in the studio.
